Red Russian kale

Red Russian kale
grey wool trousers
embroidered slips
quote Tolstoy and Suess
hairy-legged little crabs
scuttle in from the floor
beneath Penobscot Bay
gunkhole in a skiff
kill in a duel
haul traps all night in your sleep
pull root vegetables
glue model airplanes
gas engines and gliders
Remember Norman from Peyton Place?
His mother took his temperature.
mutter Siberian hunting songs
(Are there any?)
to the pale blue faces
standing in a circle in the snow
moths beat the screen door
summer keeps coming
grotesque
hot and damp
paint a picket fence
step through the gate to the circus
wiggle hips
long-limbed
in a pink-yellow party dress
puffed rice
raisins
milk for breakfast
pebbles under toes
jaunty little paper doll child
smelling glue and beetles
chasing elephants down Chestnut Street
daddy
in wool
a brute
frontiersman
catches lobsters in traps
and sinks to the bottom on the bay
sugar wings carry him away
