Cape Cod Witch

blackbird slippers on her feet
cast a spell in the kitchen
good witch magic
bubbling cauldron
back door thrown open
blue sky wind changing the season
goose bones lined up in straight rows on planks
clay pots too
overflowing with egg shells
speckled grey
pale blue
pink
and yellow
cranberries in pots
blueberries in pots
tiny mice wearing vests
chisel and sing
a dugout canoe
gift for their queen
sacred ears of corn dance this time of year
squirrels and rabbits scurry
on the cape
the Pilgrims are coming
the Pilgrims are coming
twenty eight hogshead of corn in 1622
remember
half-moon frolic deep in the cedars
buckets of hickory nuts pop in the fire
still
to this day
so good-bye for now
pumpkin vine man
she'll be at Nauset tonight
in the woods
and the marsh
on the wings of a heron
blue
